How to Make and Use Cannabis Oil

You have probably heard a lot about cannabis oil lately, and for a good reason. It is an excellent method of using cannabis with a long list of benefits and a great option if you’re new to medical cannabis or you don’t like the idea of inhalation.

It is no longer a secret that cannabis oil can become a little expensive. Buying a high-quality cannabis oil is an option that may not be available to everyone. You can easily make cannabis oil yourself at home. It's easier than you think.

If you want to know how to make cannabis oil from the comfort of your kitchen, this article is written primarily for you. Read on to find out how easy it is to make cannabis oil yourself.

What Is Cannabis Oil?

Cannabis oils are concentrates created by the extraction of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD from cannabis plants. Cannabis oils are extracts from cannabis plants. Unprocessed, they contain the same 100 or more active ingredients as plants, but the compounds' balance depends on the particular plants from which the oil comes.

The two main active ingredients in cannabis plants are cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Oil extracted from hemp plants can contain a high amount of CBD, while skunk plant oil has much more THC. THC produces the effect sought after by recreational cannabis users, while medicinal oils primarily contain CBD.

How To Make Your Cannabis Oil

Before you start with a recipe for homemade cannabis oil, you will need to decide what type of cannabis to use. You have three options: a THC-rich cannabis flower, a CBD-rich cannabis flower, or a combination of both.

In addition, you will need to decarboxylate the ground cannabis before slowly heating the cannabis and oil for a few hours, either in a double boiler or in a slow cooker. Any oil can be used, although coconut oil is a popular choice because its high content of fatty acids is ideal for fat-loving cannabinoids.

It is difficult to calculate your oil's exact strength without testing in the lab, as cannabinoids and terpenes will be lost during the extraction process. However, you can estimate the power with a few simple calculations. For example, let’s say you started with a strain that contained 20% THC.

If you poured 1 cup of oil with 3.5 grams of ground decarboxylated cannabis, then the approximate strength would be: 3.5 grams x 20% = 700 mg in one cup of oil. Since there are approximately 237 ml in the cup, if you were to take an oil dropper (the standard dropper size is 1 ml), the dose would be around 3 mg/ml.

Making The Cannabis Oil

One of the simplest ways to make cannabis oil is on the stove. All you need is a few supplies you probably have on hand, and a few high quality decarboxylated cannabis.

Ingredients and stocks:

  • 1 oz cannabis flower blossom (use more or less depending on your personal needs)
  • 1 cup olive or coconut oil
  • Saucepan
  • Gauze (or an alternative that will allow you to filter the oil after cooking)
  • Glass storage containers

Preparation:

  • Put the oil of your choice in the pan and heat gently. If using coconut oil, heat until dissolved. If using olive oil, heat until lukewarm.
  • Add a pot of decarboxylated cannabis and stir. Reduce fire to a minimum.
  • Simmer the oil and cannabis over low heat for 1 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the mixture from the heat and allow it to cool slightly before preparing it for filtration. If you use coconut oil, keep in mind that it will harden if it is cooled for too long.
  • When the oil has cooled a little, pour it through the cheesecloth into mason jars. To avoid damage, strain into a large bowl and pour into mason jars.

The greatest enemies of your cannabis oil are heat, light, air, and weather. All of these environmental factors destroy cannabinoid and terpene levels. Therefore store your cannabis oil in a cool, dark, and dry place.

Make sure you label the oil clearly and keep it out of the reach of children and pets. That's all! You have successfully learned how to make cannabis oil yourself.

How Do I Use Cannabis Oil?

Now that you have your own pure, homemade cannabis oil, there are many ways to use it. You can substitute it in your favorite recipes. Any of your recipe that calls for coconut or olive oil can easily be replaced with cannabis oil. Use it for frying vegetables or in your favorite pastries, but remember that it has a great earthy taste.

Also, keep in mind that if your cannabis oil is heated to high temperatures, it will lose some or all of the cannabinoid content. Also, please avoid using the cannabis oil for frying and keep the heat low when using it for frying.

Cannabis oil can also be used in pasta sauces and is an amazing addition to homemade pesto sauce. It's easy to add your favorite coffee or tea.

Using cannabis oil isn't the only thing it's used for. You can also use cannabis oil as a massage oil. In doing so, you can add your favorite essential oils to enhance their wellness properties. For example, lavender oil has a fantastic scent and promotes feelings of calm and relaxation.

How To Take Cannabis Oil

Cannabis oil is one of the approved ways of ingesting marijuana for medical purposes. Whether you want to bake, drink infusion recipes, or take the oil sublingually (under the tongue), the possibilities are endless.

There are many ways to take cannabis oil that are safe and effective. Here are some popular ways to take cannabis oil:

  1. Under The Tongue

Cannabis oil is usually taken sublingually, where the mucosa absorbs it under the tongue and eventually penetrates the bloodstream. Unlike tablets or other medication forms, sublingual medications can enter the bloodstream quickly and in high concentrations due to the increased vascularity of the cheeks and gums.

  1. Orally

Cannabis oil can also be consumed directly orally. Instead of holding the drops under your tongue, you can swallow them immediately. Interestingly, the drug is metabolized differently when ingested rather than absorbed under the tongue.

  1. Tea

Cannabis tea is becoming increasingly popular. Some teas contain various amino acids and other balancing compounds found in essential oils and can act as stress relievers. By adding a few drops of cannabis oil to tea, you can get a "double dose" of calm and relaxation.

  1. Smoothies

Another major way to consume cannabis oil is to add it to smoothies. Cannabis oil mixes very well with mango because it shares a compound called myrcene. Just add a few drops of your cannabis oil to your favorite smoothie recipe and enjoy.

Finally, there are many ways to use cannabis oil. However, keep in mind the appropriate doses for the selected recipe. The general rule is to “start small and go slow,” so you can find the right dose for yourself in foods, drinks, or other applications of your choice.
